Fundraising fun: Public Interest Law Project.

BAWF has a long-standing commitment to using our “talents” for local non-profit organizations’ fund-raising needs, and we’re excited for our latest: The Public Interest Law Project. We discovered this opportunity through a friend’s roommate who’s inolved with the PILP at Lewis and Clark College in Portland.  Evan, Alex and our friend Ali Clayrs will be playing at  Holocene on Thursday February 4th to benefit this organization.

The Public Interest Law Project was organized by law students in 1990 as a chapter of the National Association of Public Interest Law (NAPIL) – now known as Equal Justice Works. PILP is dedicated to encouraging law students to pursue public interest careers. PILP’s primary goals are two-fold:

  1. providing summer stipends for students working in public interest law; and
  2. establishing a loan repayment program for graduates choosing to pursue careers in the public interest profession.

An annual auction and other fund-raising efforts have allowed PILP to award ten to fifteen stipends per summer. Summer stipend recipients have worked for a variety of organizations, dealing with issues such as children’s rights, environmental protection, domestic violence, and civil rights. The maximum amount of the summer stipend was recently increased to $5,000.

We’re very thankful for the work they do, and we’re glad they’ve allowed us to assist in the only way we know how: playing tunes! The show starts at 8pm, and we’ll go on around 9pm. We hope to see you there! More details below.

The next day we all go to the beach for our first ever BAWF weekend retreat where we’ll write new tunes, have plenty of business time, and (in-between that) play ungodly amounts of Rock Band™ (NO BEATLES! -Alex).

Party hard Corvallis: BAWF shares the stage with Tim Karplus once again!

10pm, Impulse, $3, 21+, 1$ beers!

First: Big thanks to the fans who showed up at Ash St. last night, along with Fez Fatale and t.h.e.m.e for making it a great show. You all rock! Now we do it all again tonight in Corvallis with our former bassist Tim Karplus, and his new band!

Tie down your mom… This Tim is the mother-flippin’ bomb.

Tim has a brand new group, and with his name on the band it won’t be long before he ascends from obscurity and surpasses his meager roots. Wait a sec, we are part of those roots… damn! In any case, go check out Tim on MySpace and show him some love. That is, if you can remember your MySpace password (zing!). We’ve also embedded a music video from Tim below, so be sure to check that out, seeing as he can do no wrong.

“$1 beers? Surely you’re crazy!”

Don’t call us Shirley (I don’t think that joke works in writing). We’ll be playing tonight at Impulse Bar and Grill on Monroe (in the old Tailgaters’ spot). They’ve remodeled and classed the place up, so don’t write them off as the same “old ****hole” that the previous owners ran (would someone please put a leash on Alex?). Music starts at 10pm, but get there early and enjoy $1 BEERS ‘TIL YOU KILL THE KEG! We like this deal because music sounds better with every drink consumed. This is also the first night of live music that Impulse has ever had, and we’re going to make it one to remember. We’re looking forward to hanging with our Corvallis friends again, so we hope to see you there! Check some details at the Facebook event page, or at the bottom of this post.

TONIGHT, Fri. 1/22: Ash St. Saloon in PDX. Plus special snuggie bonus!

This post is only relevant for about 12 more hours, but we’re crazy and reckless like that. (And we’ll repeat this folly tomorrow, Saturday, the 23rd.)

Come see us tonight at the Ash St. Saloon in downtown PDX! BAWF will be supported by fellow Portland bands Fez Fatale (lounge/jazz/rock) and t.h.e.m.e (acoustic/latin/rock). Show starts at 9:30pm, BAWF goes on at 11:30ish. $5, 21+. Arrive early and get your drink on with us while we wait to play!

Special bonus!

THE FIRST FIVE (5) PEOPLE TO SHOW UP IN SNUGGIES GET IN FOR FREE.

First 5 snugglers get in free!

Why would we do such a thing to our fans? Is it because we’re sad about missing the PDX.FM 2010 Portland Snuggie Pubcrawl tomorrow night? That’s partially it, but we’re making our own destination party in Corvallis at the same time at Impulse Bar & Grill, so we’ll have plenty of fun anyway. We’re mostly doing it because Alex likes to force his faux-ironic sensibilities upon the masses (read: five people). If you see someone wearing a snuggie at the show be sure to buy them a drink because they’re probably broke. If you see someone with a backwards bath-robe on, please buy them 2 drinks. You will not see us wearing snuggies on stage because A) we’d get way too sweaty, and B) we’re all too broke to afford snuggies (or bathrobes for that matter).

Check out show details below, or at the Facebook event page for this show. See you there!

We’ve been busy! Alternate title: It’s business time!

Excuse us, we’ve neglected our own news outlet for far too long. We like to think we have some excuses for the cobwebs around here, but we won’t try to make them. (We’re responsible like that. *cough*)

Meet our new bassist.

After Halloween we’ve officially got a new bass player (Steve Hammond!) whom we’re very excited to be playing with. It’s incredible how quickly he has taken up the reigns to help us bust out our same tasty grooves, and been ever-helpful when we’re writing new tunes. Watch our blog for a BAWF v. Steve interview to get you better acquainted with our new power bottom. (We’re assuming Steve is on-board with this idea. We haven’t told him yet.)

Tim’s new band and BAWF in Corvallis Saturday, 1/23.

You may be asking, “What happened to Tim‽” Fear not, denizens of Earth! We’re still great friends, and we were lucky enough to have him guest with us for a rendition of ‘If You’re Lonely’ at our Buffalo Gap show last week in Portland, andwe had a blast. We’ve got even better news for this coming week though: We’re playing with Tim’s brand new group, The Tim Karplus Band, on Sat. January 23rd at 10:00 p.m. for just $3 at Impulse on Monroe in Corvallis! (At the old Tailgater’s spot, but don’t mistake it for that same old crummy bar, there’s apparently a dress code at Impulse, see this article for more info on the new venue.) Tim’s got some great players in his band who are long-time friends of BAWF, like drummer Dave Schwarm (such a good friend that our drummer rented his room over the summer) and bassist Jason Lusk (we’ve shared the stage with his other awesome band, ‘Target for Tomorrow’, countless times).

BAWF returns to Ash ST. Saloon Friday, 1/22.

Before you drive all the way down Corvallis to see us at Impulse, come see us on Friday in Portland at the Ash St. Saloon at 9:30 p.m. with ‘Fez Fatale’ and ‘t.h.e.m.e.’ The show will also be 21+ & $5 cover charge. We’ve played at Ash St. a couple times, and we’ll keep coming back as long as you guys return the favor! Great beer, great location, great layout, great staff, great bands. It’s GRRRRREAT! (Yes, the poster is almost identical to the Corvallis one. But to be fair, this one is PURPLE!)

Gettin’ busy with BAWF.

We’re now half-way through January, but that won’t stop us from making a New Year’s resolution! With the start of this new year, we’re going to be far more diligent about keeping this website a fresh experience with new pictures, videos, recordings and blog posts. We’ve got a great intern working with us thanks to the University of Oregon school of journalism (I’ll resist the urge joke about a Duck interning for a bunch of Beavers, hi John!). Don’t let his title fool you. His presence makes getting things done easier, but he also gives us more things to get done! Before John showed up we’d have PR projects piling up with little progress, so we owe him a lot for kicking us in to action. We’re lucky to have him as part of the BAWF family, and we’ll be sad (and stoked!) when he has to go and hit the “big time” working for an organization that can pay him properly for all his hard work.

Now you’ve been updated on some of the BAWF happenings since Halloween! Stay tuned for our next (and timely!) blog post where we talk to Steve about the finer points of being in BAWF, the new music we’re writing and playing, and our current plans for new recording sessions.  Attending our shows means you won’t have to wait to hear new BAWF, so stay in touch with our website, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter accounts. :)
